Predstavuje pocet ruzných úrovní vstupního parametru. Vetšina experimentálních (faktorových) plánu pracuje se dvema (-1, +1) nebo tremi (-1, 0, +1) úrovnemi variability, avšak centrální kompozitní plán pracuje obvykle s peti úrovnemi variability (-?2, -1, 0, +1, +?2). Složitejší plány experimentálního návrhu mohou mít ješte více úrovní variability, zatímco napr. frakcní faktoriální plány snižují pocet potrebných pokusu podle urcitých pravidel.
